How to prepare for your in home Newborn Session

Congratulations! You’re expecting and have a newborn session scheduled for in your home. What happens next?

First off, plan your outfits around you. You want to feel comfortable and confident. Stick to neutral colors and build a color pallet off of your outfit. Don’t match, but coordinate colors. I offer style and select for all my clients to help in planning their outfits. As always, reach out for advice! I’m happy to guide you in the right direction.

Secondly, prepare your home. I typically shoot in the living room, master bedroom and nursery. Sometimes, I’ll use the kitchen too! Clean and declutter these rooms ahead of your session. I’ll be looking for the most natural light, so if there is another room in your house we could use, great!

This goes hand in hand, but the time of day is important when doing a photoshoot in your home. Things to think about… when does my home get the best natural light? I default to late morning for in home sessions as that usually gives the best natural light in the house. (Late morning also tends to work for older siblings that still take naps in the early afternoon.)

Relax. I’ll be coming in the comfort of your own home to capture those first few moments with your new baby. I’ll get a few of those everyone looking at the camera, but my favorite to capture are those in between moments. You gazing at your newborn, how tiny they are in your arms or how suddenly you toddler doesn’t look so little anymore. The session will be led by your baby (or toddler). If we need to take breaks for eating, soothing, tantrums or diaper changes… that is okay! I’m a mom of 3 and get it. :)

Lastly, if you have pets….they will be in your photos. That is all. Can’t wait to meet you and your family!
